The SC09 panels program aims to bring out the most interesting and challenging ideas at the conference, covering topics that are relevant, timely, and thought provoking. Designed to promote discussion on large and small topics, panels bring together great thinkers, practitioners, and the occasional gadfly to present and debate various topics relevant to high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis. Audience participation is always encouraged. Drop by a panel and enjoy the show.

This year's panels cover a range of topics, including many conference themes:

  • Cyber Infrastructure in Healthcare Management
    The impact of cyberinfrastructure in healthcare management; e.g., how the informatics took an important role in controlling the recent outbreak of H1N1 flu.
  • Energy Efficient Data Centers for HPC, How Lean and Green do we need to be?
    Current Data Centers of 20 MW are not uncommon, with future
    extrapolations to over 100 MWs. Will these future data centers need to be in Alaska next to their own power plant? Where is the trend taking us and what can we do to design-in the efficiency needed to ensure we do not preclude building the HPC machines we will need in the future.
  • Applications Architecture Power Puzzle
    Panelists will be given a set of standard components that are on announced vendor roadmaps; each also gets to make one mystery component of no more complexity than a commercially available FPGA. They have 10 minutes to disclose their system architectures and mystery components, and estimate performance for three given applications at 1MW of power.
  • Flash Technology in HPC:  Let the Revolution Begin
    Learn how Flash is being deployed as a revolutionary technology that delivers faster time to solution for HPC applications at significantly lower costs and lower power consumption than traditional disk based approaches.
  • The Road to Exascale: Hardware and Software Challenges
    The obstacles we face on the road to an exascale system are qualitatively harder than any we have dealt with until now. This panel reviews the hardware and software advances needed and will attempt to lay out research, development and engineering roadmaps to successfully overcome the obstacles.
  • Preparing the World for Ubiquitous Parallelism
    Multicore platforms are transforming the nature of computation – increasingly, FLOPs are free, but the people who know how to program petascale, manycore platforms are not. This panel focuses on the abstractions, models, and (re-)training necessary to move parallel programming into a broad audience.
